Asics Trading Co., Ltd. conducted an actual condition survey among 542 women in their 10s to 70s to promote understanding of foot care and correct shoe selection. Foot care is important not only for grooming and beauty but also for maintaining overall health. Generally, women's feet are more prone to deformation than men's, making early awareness of foot care methods crucial. The survey was conducted with the cooperation of podiatry expert Dr. Katsuya Hisamichi (Director of Shimokitazawa Hospital).
Key Findings: - 95.4% of respondents have foot concerns, with issues often starting in their 10s or 20s (63.4%). - Top 5 concerns: 'Foot fatigue' (42.7%), 'No matching shoes' (42.2%), 'Swelling' (40.6%), 'Cold feet' (39.5%), and 'Foot shape' (38.9%). - About 1 in 2 women (49.3%) perform some form of foot care. - 71.1% of those who do foot care feel a positive impact on their self-esteem, and 76.8% feel healthier. - Common care methods include stretching (52.8%), moisturizing (52.4%), and lymph massage (32.2%).
Comments from Dr. Katsuya Hisamichi: Women's feet typically undergo deformation during two major life stages: pregnancy/childbirth and menopause. During pregnancy, hormones like relaxin and weight gain cause arches to flatten. During menopause, the decrease in estrogen loosens tendons and ligaments. Foot shape and size change accordingly.
He emphasizes the importance of 'intrinsic muscles'—small muscles in the sole essential for balance and shock absorption. Exercises like toe 'rock-paper-scissors' or 'towel gathers' can strengthen these muscles. Stretching the Achilles tendon to maintain ankle flexibility is also recommended. Most importantly, he advises comparing your left and right feet daily after bathing to notice any loss of symmetry in shape or color.
Regarding shoe selection, he advises not to sacrifice fashion entirely but to choose 'better' shoes. Do not be bound by past shoe sizes; consult a shoe fitter, trust your own sensation, and maintain foot health through daily observation and care.
