On April 29, Reiwa 8 (2026), the Emperor and Empress attended a ceremony at the Nippon Budokan to commemorate the "Showa Centennial."

This marks 100 years since the beginning of the Showa era in 1926.

The design is a dignified representation of Japan's most cherished and beloved "sacred Mount Fuji," adorned with the national flower, the "cherry blossom," and flowing auspicious clouds.

While the first 20 years of the Showa era were marked by war, the war ended in August 1945, and economic development began.

In 1959, the Crown Prince's wedding took place, followed by the Tokyo Olympics in 1964, the opening of the Shinkansen bullet train, and the development of expressways, all accelerating economic growth. The Osaka Expo and the Seikan Tunnel connected Hokkaido, Honshu, and Kyushu, and the completion of the Honshu-Shikoku Bridge further linked Honshu and Shikoku.

Reiwa 8 (2026) heralds a splendid and joyous era, marking the "Showa Centennial."
