Visa Worldwide Japan conducted a survey, commissioned to Macromill, on the usage of cashless and mobile payments in in-person transactions. The survey involved 9,279 cashless users aged 18 to 69 across Japan. The results indicate that as cashless payments have become widespread, consumer criteria for choosing payment methods have shifted from 'what to use' to 'how smoothly they can pay.'
Mobile payments are expanding, driven by this focus on 'smoothness,' and have firmly taken root in daily shopping scenes, particularly among the younger generation. Furthermore, consumers are increasingly choosing to diversify their payment methods rather than consolidating them into a single option. Approximately 70% of consumers currently use multiple mobile payment methods based on their goals and situations. Convenience and economic benefits, such as reward points, are cited as key selection criteria. Visa remains committed to supporting an environment where everyone can enjoy safe and smooth payment experiences tailored to their lifestyle and preferences.
