A vast expanse of alpine plants, a sky-facing lake, and vibrant green moss creating a mystical landscape—these natural monuments define the beauty of Nakanojo Town in Gunma Prefecture. A day-trip tour visiting two of the town’s most iconic scenic spots, Lake Nonomi and Chatsubomigoke Park, is now accepting bookings. With veteran guides and a small-group format, participants can fully immerse themselves in the rich natural environment of Nakanojo.
Lake Nonomi
Located at an elevation of approximately 1,500 meters, Lake Nonomi is known as a “treasure trove of alpine plants.” From spring to early autumn, over 300 species of flora bloom around the lake, painting the landscape in delicate colors. In autumn, the fiery red foliage reflects vividly on the lake’s surface beneath a clear blue sky.
Chatsubomigoke Park
Designated as a National Natural Monument under the name “Rokugo Chatsubomigoke Biological Community and Iron Ore Formation Site,” Chatsubomigoke Park is home to a unique moss species with strong acid resistance. It hosts the largest known colony of this moss in East Asia.
The lush green moss carpet transforms throughout the seasons—complemented by spring azaleas, fresh summer foliage, autumn colors, and a silvery winter landscape—creating an ever-changing mystical scenery year-round.
Why a Guided Tour Ensures a Safe and Enjoyable Experience
① Expert local guides with in-depth knowledge
Experienced guides lead walks tailored to the blooming seasons, offering deep insights into alpine plants, the ecology of Chatsubomigoke moss, and the broader natural heritage of Nakanojo Town.
② Hassle-free transportation
Both destinations are located in remote natural areas with limited public transit access. The tour starts and ends at “JR Nagano-Ohshikuchi Station,” making it easy for those without a car or driving confidence to join and enjoy nature comfortably.
③ Small-group format for comfort and accessibility
With a maximum of only 4 participants, the tour can be adapted to individual fitness levels. Groups of four can even book a private tour, ensuring everyone can fully enjoy the guide’s commentary without missing a word.
Special Gift for Overnight Guests: Original Tenugui Towel
Participants who stay at accommodations within Nakanojo Town will receive an original tenugui (traditional Japanese hand towel) as a gift.
Designed by Hiroko Hoshino, an artist featured in the Nakanojo Biennale, and handcrafted using the traditional “chusen” dyeing technique at Nakamura Dyeing Studio—the only studio in Gunma Prefecture preserving this method—each towel is a unique, non-commercial keepsake of your visit to Nakanojo.
Connecting Local Charm to the Future
Nakanojo Town boasts diverse tourism assets, including seasonal natural scenery, hot springs, and art. This tour is one of several initiatives aimed at deepening visitors’ appreciation of the town’s unique appeal.
Moving forward, the Nakanojo Town Tourism Association will continue enhancing experiential tourism based on local resources, expanding visitor exchange and contributing to regional revitalization.
We sincerely look forward to your participation!
