38th Nasu Gojinka-sai Fire Festival Scheduled for May 2026 at Historic Sessho-seki Site

The Nasu Town Tourism Association (Tochigi Prefecture) will host the 38th Nasu Gojinka-sai on Sunday, May 31, 2026, at the 'Sessho-seki' national scenic site. This traditional ritual originated as a prayer to appease the volcanic eruptions of Mount Chausu. The festival features the 'Gojinka' (Sacred Fire), where participants in white robes carry torches from the Nasu Onsen Shrine in a ritual procession to pray for health and a bountiful harvest.

The event highlights the local legend of the 'Nine-Tailed Fox,' a mythological creature prominent in classical literature and modern pop culture. The program includes 'Kyubi-no-Kitsune Daiko' drum performances, fox-themed face painting, and a cosplay parade. Additionally, the 'Kyubi-no-Ichi' market will feature popular local food vendors, including award-winning bakeries from the 'Bread Festival Award 2025.'

Logistics and Access: Traffic regulations will be in effect around the venue from 14:30 to 21:00. Onsite parking at Sessho-seki and Nasu Onsen Shrine will be unavailable. Visitors are directed to use temporary parking at the former Nasu Elementary School or the Nasu Highlands Visitor Center, with shuttle buses operating between the school and the venue. The association aims to provide a safe and immersive cultural experience following a hiatus in the previous year due to weather conditions.
