Concerns Over Cost Cited as Primary Barrier to Skin Spot Treatment
General Incorporated Association SKINLABO surveyed 300 individuals who are considering or have undergone skin spot treatment. The findings revealed that 62.0% (186 respondents) cited the fear of mounting costs as their primary concern. This was followed by concerns over the need for multiple clinic visits (37.0%, 111 respondents) and uncertainty regarding whether the treatment is suitable for their specific spots (36.7%, 110 respondents), highlighting that cost, time commitment, and treatment selection are significant barriers to seeking professional care.
When asked about their experience with skin spot treatment, the most common response was that they have considered it but never received treatment (37.7%, 113 respondents). This was followed by those who have already received treatment (25.0%, 75 respondents), those currently gathering information (17.0%, 51 respondents), and those relying solely on over-the-counter medication or skincare (16.3%, 49 respondents). Only 4.0% (12 respondents) reported never having considered it.
These results indicate that while there is widespread interest in skin spot treatment, many remain in the consideration or information-gathering phase, or rely on self-care without professional consultation.
When asked about specific fears regarding clinical treatment, the top concern remained financial (62.0%), followed by the need for repeated visits (37.0%) and treatment suitability (36.7%). Other concerns included post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or pigment recurrence (25.7%), pain (24.0%), lingering redness (19.3%), and the risk of aggravating melasma with laser treatment (19.0%).
This survey suggests that the hesitation to seek skin spot treatment is driven less by a lack of interest and more by anxieties regarding cost, time commitment, and difficulty in selecting the right treatment.
### Survey Overview - Survey Name: Survey on Skin Spots - Survey Subject: General Incorporated Association SKINLABO - Methodology: Internet-based survey - Respondents: 300 individuals who considered or underwent skin spot treatment - Period: April 9, 2026 – April 22, 2026
### Commentary from Dermatologist Dr. Yoshiko Takada (Certified by the Japanese Dermatological Association) The survey shows that most individuals considering skin spot treatment are not rejecting the treatment itself. In reality, multiple overlapping anxieties—such as unknown costs, the burden of repeated visits, and a lack of confidence in choosing the right treatment—are preventing them from seeking professional help.
While spots may appear similar, they can differ in type and cause, such as solar lentigines, melasma, freckles, or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Therefore, while laser therapy may be suitable for some, others may benefit more from a combination of medication, topical applications, skincare, or light therapy.
In cases involving melasma or skin prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, self-diagnosis can lead to unsatisfactory results, including recurrence or redness. To choose a satisfying treatment, it is essential to consult with a specialist about the type of spot, estimated number of sessions, potential recovery trajectory, and measures for preventing pigmentation issues.
