01 Overview of the Special Exhibition

Ise City, Mie Prefecture, has long flourished as a gateway town to the Ise Grand Shrine, nurturing diverse cultural traditions. In the art world, the Maruyama-Shijō school—founded by Maruyama Ōkyo—was widely embraced and passed down through generations.

This exhibition focuses on Hashimoto Meisen (1876–1961), a painter of the Maruyama-Shijō school, his cousin Hashimoto Heihachi, a renowned woodcarver, and Kitazono Katsue (born Hashimoto Kenkichi, 1908–1988), a poet, photographer, and designer.

03 About the Ise Furuichi Sangū Street Museum

Furuichi was once a key stop on the pilgrimage route connecting the Outer and Inner Shrines of Ise. During the Edo period, it thrived with inns, restaurants, and theaters due to the popularity of Ise pilgrimages. The museum preserves and displays historical photographs, maps, and everyday artifacts that reflect the town’s vibrant past.
