Parent-Child Railway Experience Event to Be Held in August and September! Two Courses Featuring Mikasa Railway Village and Otaru City Museum Main Building

The Hokkaido Railway Revitalization Council will host a 'Parent-Child Railway Experience Event,' where families can ride JR local trains together to learn about the joys of railways and the importance of public transportation.

On Saturday, August 22, 2026, the 'Mikasa Railway Village Course' will take participants to Mikasa Railway Village. On Saturday, September 12, 2026, the 'Otaru City Museum Main Building Course' will visit the Otaru City Museum Main Building.

After learning about ticket purchasing, train etiquette, safety, and courtesy at Sapporo Station, parent-child pairs will board JR local trains. At the destinations, guided tours will introduce the history of Hokkaido's railways and their connection to local communities, along with steam locomotive (SL) riding experiences.

Overview of the Two Courses

Both courses begin with instruction on ticket purchasing and train etiquette at Sapporo Station, followed by a ride on a JR local train. Guided tours and SL riding experiences are scheduled at the destinations, offering families an engaging way to learn about railway culture and regional history.

〇 August 22 (Sat) – Mikasa Railway Village Course

Ride the JR train to Mikasa Railway Village!

After learning about ticket purchasing and train etiquette at Sapporo Station, participants will take a JR local train to Iwamizawa Station. At Mikasa Railway Village, they will tour the Mikasa Railway Memorial Hall and learn about Hokkaido's railway history through guided explanations. A ride on SL No. S-304 is also planned. This event is ideal for summer vacation independent research projects.

〇 September 12 (Sat) – Otaru City Museum Main Building Course

Ride the JR train to explore Otaru's history and culture!

After learning about ticket purchasing and train etiquette at Sapporo Station, participants will take a JR local train to Otaru Station. At the Otaru City Museum Main Building, guided tours will cover Otaru's history, railways, industry, and culture. A ride on the SL Iron Horse will also be offered.
