From September 3rd to September 6th, 2026, the AMC will host its event and exhibition, "Semana AMC." Semana AMC Official Website
"Cinematic Quantum (CQ)," organized by the Japanese Society of Cinematographers (JSC), the Agency for Cultural Affairs, and the Japan Arts Council, aims to foster globally-minded cinematographers by building an international educational project. As part of the "Creator Support Fund," this initiative focuses on cultural exchange between Japanese and international cinematographers and research into next-generation visual expression, going beyond mere technical training to cultivate talent through film and culture.
◼️ Why Mexico, Now?
In recent years, cinematographers from Mexico have made a significant impact on the film industry.
Their delicate lighting that utilizes natural light, camera work that links space and emotion, long takes that reflect the inner world of individuals, and visual design that balances "social relevance" and "sensitivity." Mexico has brought us a new visual culture.
CQ seeks to explore how "land, religion, views on life and death, cities, and family values" connect to visual expression, rather than simply learning these as shooting techniques.
The significance for Japanese cinematographers to learn in Mexico is not merely "overseas training." The JSC chose Mexico because they believe it allows for the expression of "cinematic values." In recent years, Mexican cinematographers have changed the world not just through their technical skills, but through their perspective on "how to view people." Meanwhile, Japanese cinematographers possess extremely high technical skills and delicate sensibilities, but there are walls they cannot overcome with these alone.
◼️ Why is Mexican Visual Expression So Powerful?
Mexican cinematographers don't just create "beautiful images"; they capture "feelings" on screen through light, shadow, silence, distance, humidity, cities, violence, faith, and family.
◼️ Japan and Mexico Actually Share Similar Sensibilities
At first glance, Japanese and Mexican cultures may seem different. However, both countries share many commonalities.
This is precisely why Japanese cinematographers have the potential to understand Mexican visual language. CQ's goal is not simply technical acquisition. By linking Japan's tranquility with Mexico's intensity, and Japan's sense of space with Mexico's dynamism, a new visual language will be born.
CQ Master Class Mexico is not a "place to be taught."
The aim is not to "go to learn," but to "go to converse."
Interacting with cinematographers from AMC and ASC offers not only networking opportunities but also a chance to discover "What are the world's DPs aiming for?" and "Why does their work move people's hearts?"
This master class plans to invite at least one globally influential cinematographer (DP) each from AMC (Mexican Society of Cinematographers) and ASC (American Society of Cinematographers).
The final list of instructors is expected to be confirmed 3-4 weeks before the event.
