Wakayama City is the capital of Wakayama Prefecture, located in the northern part of the prefecture, and is situated within an hour from central Osaka and Kansai International Airport. During the Edo period, it was ruled by the Kishu Tokugawa clan, one of the Gosanke (the top three Tokugawa houses), and produced shoguns such as Tokugawa Yoshimune. It boasts numerous historical spots, including Wakayama Castle, which was their residence, and 'Wakanoura, the sacred land of poetry,' sung by the Manyo poet Yamabe no Akahito. Wakayama City, with its mild climate throughout the year, flows with a gentle time that is 'not too urban, not too rural.'
