Niigata City, Niigata Prefecture, is currently hosting a special exhibition titled '270 Years of Reclamation of Lake Fushima: The Lagoon and Its People,' which introduces the charm of Lake Fushima (Fukushima-gata), the largest lagoon within the city, through historical, folkloric, and artistic materials.

This exhibition offers visitors a chance to explore not only the rich and beautiful natural environment of Lake Fushima but also its historical evolution and cultural significance.

Special Exhibition: '270 Years of Reclamation of Lake Fushima: The Lagoon and Its People'

This year, Niigata City, recognized globally as an 'International Wetland City NIIGATA' under the Ramsar Convention, will host the World Mayors' Conference on Wetland Cities from November 30 to December 2.

Additionally, it marks the 270th anniversary since Yamamoto Jōemon, known as a pioneer of Lake Fushima's reclamation, began developing new farmland in the lagoon during the Edo period.

In light of these milestones, the exhibition showcases historical documents related to land reclamation, records depicting the lives of people who benefited from the lagoon, and artworks inspired by the rich natural environment and human activities around the lagoon. It presents diverse relationships between Lake Fushima and the people who have lived with or been inspired by it.
