Goats Grazed at Solar Power Plant to Curb Mower Use

Intellect Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Kyobashi, Chuo-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director and President: Naoki Kanemaru; hereinafter “the Company”) has launched an initiative for goat grazing for weed control at a solar power plant it operates and manages (O&M) in Kurihara City, Miyagi Prefecture. This initiative is a collaboration with Kyowa Tokushu Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Kurihara City, Miyagi Prefecture; hereinafter “the neighboring company”), a nearby enterprise.

This initiative was realized by providing the grassland within the power plant as grazing land to the neighboring company, which faced the challenge of a shortage of green fodder for livestock in winter. It represents a new form of regional cooperation that simultaneously achieves weed control at the power plant and addresses the neighboring company's challenges.

The target power plant area is approximately 18,000 m², where 8 goats (including kids) are being grazed. Goat grazing for weed control leads to reduced fuel consumption, lower CO₂ emissions, and noise suppression by curbing the operation of mowers, thereby contributing to the reduction of environmental burden. It is also expected to be a sustainable operating method that leads to improved work efficiency and enhanced safety.

Future Outlook

The Company positions power plant operation that coexists with local communities as an important theme, beyond merely promoting renewable energy. Through this initiative, we will contribute to the realization of the SDGs, specifically “Climate Action” and “Partnerships for the Goals” (local coexistence). Going forward, we aim to establish a new power plant operation model that balances environmental value and business viability, with a view to expanding this model to other power plants.
