Omiai, Inc., operated by the app "Omiai" under Enito Group Inc., conducted an "Awareness Survey on Dates on Extremely Hot Days" targeting 1,284 men and women looking for love or marriage.

In April 2026, the Japan Meteorological Agency decided to define days with a maximum temperature of 40°C or higher as "extremely hot days." As extreme heat exceeding 40°C is recognized as a realistic risk, changes are emerging in how people spend their time outdoors and go on dates during the summer.

The survey found that awareness of "extremely hot days" was 90.1%, indicating that temperatures of 40°C or higher are becoming a common understanding among people. When asked if they would want to meet a person they met on a matching app for a first date even on an extremely hot day, 61.0% responded, "Want to meet, but want to adjust date content." This suggests that extremely hot days are not necessarily "days not to meet," but rather days to meet in a way that is not strenuous, with consideration for the location, travel, and physical condition.

1 Awareness of "Extremely Hot Days" of 40°C or Higher is Widely Penetrated at 90.1%

When asked if they knew the term "extremely hot day," 55.2% said they "knew the meaning" and 34.9% said they had "heard of it," for a total of 90.1% who were aware of extremely hot days. This is likely due to the extensive media coverage of this term's designation in response to recent heatwaves.

2 61.0% Respond "Want to meet, but want to adjust date content" Even on Extremely Hot Days

When asked if they would want to meet someone they matched with on an extremely hot day (40°C or higher), the most common response was "Want to meet, but want to adjust date content" at 61.0%.

Looking at the responses by gender, 27.0% of men responded "Want to meet as scheduled if possible," which was 15.0 percentage points higher than the 12.0% of women. On the other hand, 17.1% of women responded "Want to change to another day if possible," which was 9.7 percentage points higher than the 7.4% of men.

These results indicate that extremely hot days are not necessarily "days not to meet," but are perceived as "days to meet after adjusting to a comfortable format." However, by gender, men showed a relatively high intention to meet as scheduled, while women showed a slightly higher intention to change to another day. For dates, it seems important to adjust plans while considering the other person's perception of heat and concerns about their physical condition.

3 For First Dates on Extremely Hot Days, "Cafes" to Avoid Sunlight are Most Popular at 54.7%

Regarding preferred locations for a first date on an extremely hot day, "cafes" were the most popular at 54.7%, followed by "aquariums" at 11.0% and "restaurants" at 9.8%.

This suggests that for dates on extremely hot days, places where one can spend time comfortably and coolly, and places with less travel burden, are more likely to be supported than plans that involve spending long hours outdoors.

4 "Comfort of the Location" is Most Important for Dates on Extremely Hot Days, with Differences Between Genders

When asked about important factors for enjoying dates on extremely hot days, "comfort of the location" was the most cited factor overall at 38.8%. This was followed by "each other's physical condition" at 29.0% and "mutual consideration" at 28.6%.

By gender, "comfort of the location" was 42.8% for women, 8.0 percentage points higher than the 34.8% for men. On the other hand, "each other's physical condition" was 36.4% for men, 14.8 percentage points higher than the 21.6% for women. For dates on extremely hot days, while the comfort of the location is most important, women tend to prioritize "comfort of the location" more, while men tend to prioritize "consideration for physical condition" more.

5 "Choosing a Cool Place" is the Most Appreciated Consideration for Dates on Extremely Hot Days at 79.9%

Regarding appreciated considerations for dates on extremely hot days, "choosing a cool place" was the most cited at 79.9%. This was followed by "concern for physical condition" at 50.9%, "taking measures to avoid sunlight and heat" at 46.0%, "concern for drinks" at 45.7%, and "planning a shorter travel distance" at 43.3%.

By gender, "taking measures to avoid sunlight and heat" was 61.0% for women and "planning a shorter travel distance" was 55.8%, significantly higher than the 30.9% and 30.8% for men, respectively.

This indicates that on dates during extreme heat, concrete considerations that do not burden the other person are more likely to create a good impression than special arrangements. Particularly for women, measures to avoid sunlight and reduce travel burden, in addition to choosing cool places, were found to be important.

6 For Comfort on Extremely Hot Days, Willingness to Spend on "Drinks, Cafe, and Restaurant Expenses"

When asked what they would be willing to spend money on for comfort during dates on extremely hot days, the most common response was "drink expenses" at 69.7%. This was followed by "cafe and restaurant expenses" at 68.0%, "admission fees for indoor facilities" at 55.0%, and "transportation costs" at 46.2%.

This suggests that for dates on extremely hot days, people are more willing to spend money on hydration, cool dining and drinking establishments, indoor facilities, and transportation to reduce discomfort and physical burden, rather than enduring the heat.

Summary

This survey revealed that 90.1% of people are aware of the term "extremely hot day," indicating that temperatures of 40°C or higher are widely recognized by the public.

Furthermore, 61.0% responded "Want to meet, but want to adjust date content" even on extremely hot days, suggesting that the intention to meet with a partner is not significantly lost even in extreme heat. Extremely hot days appear to be perceived not as "days not to meet," but as "days to meet after adjusting to a comfortable format."

Looking at the results by gender, men had a higher proportion of responses indicating "Want to meet as scheduled if possible" compared to women, while women had a higher proportion of responses indicating "Want to change to another day if possible" compared to men. For dates on extremely hot days, it is considered important to flexibly discuss whether to proceed as scheduled, adjust the content, or change to another day, taking into account the other person's perception of heat and concerns about their physical condition.

Additionally, "comfort of the location" was the most important factor for dates on extremely hot days, and "choosing a cool place" was the most appreciated consideration. Particularly for women, there was a strong tendency to prioritize "measures to avoid sunlight and heat" and "plans with shorter travel distances," indicating a desire to avoid the burden of travel and sunlight, not just the heat itself.

Moreover, "drink expenses, cafe, and restaurant expenses" and "admission fees for indoor facilities" were ranked high as expenses people are willing to incur for comfort on extremely hot days. "Cafes" were also the most popular choice for first dates. This suggests that for dates on extremely hot days, places that are cool and can be comfortably spent even for a short time are preferred over spending long hours outdoors.

For dating and marriage hunting in the summer, concrete considerations such as choosing a cool place, shortening travel distances, and paying attention to drinks and breaks are likely to lead to a good impression on the other person, rather than special arrangements. With the increase in extremely hot days, the nature of dates appears to be shifting from "meeting while enduring the heat" to "meeting while considering comfort and physical condition."

["Omiai" Overview]

What is the matching app "Omiai" for meeting based on individuality?

"Omiai" was one of the first in Japan to launch in February 2012, and is the originator of matching apps that offer "serious encounters."

It is primarily used by those in their 30s looking for a serious relationship with marriage in mind.

Currently, 1 in 4 people in Japan get married through a matching app*3. "Omiai" proposes a new form of encounter that focuses on the essential appeal of "individuality" that emanates from a person's cherished feelings, way of life, and experiences.

Going forward, we aim to provide an experience where users can "meet themselves" by further enhancing features that use "personality" as a starting point for encounters, such as "My Best," which allows users to express their values and feelings cultivated through their experiences.

Furthermore, to ensure that users can use matching apps with greater peace of mind, "Omiai" participates as a director in the Japan Association of Love and Marriage Matching Apps and actively works towards the healthy development of the industry as a whole.
