This product repurposes leftover yarn generated during rug manufacturing, contributing to waste reduction while offering high-quality, design-forward rugs at accessible prices.

The first edition of 'Re:Rug' launched on Makuake in summer 2025 and achieved its funding goal within four hours. Thanks to widespread social media sharing and numerous requests for re-release, the team has launched a new project to introduce fresh designs.

Background of Re:Rug Development: Tackling Japan’s Waste Problem

Japan still disposes of approximately 38.11 million tons of general waste annually, including household garbage—equivalent to about 102 Tokyo Domes. Industrial waste from business activities reaches around 370 million tons per year, nearly 9.7 times the volume of general waste. At SUMINOE GROUP factories, leftover yarn—perfectly usable in quality but not suitable for final products—is generated daily and often discarded as industrial waste. *Reference: Ministry of the Environment Regarding General Waste Disposal and Treatment (FY2024), and Industrial Waste Disposal and Treatment (FY2023 results)

Since building an eco-friendly factory about 50 years ago, SUMINOE GROUP has prioritized 'environmentally conscious product development.' The company has continued pursuing sustainable choices for the planet and future generations, such as the 'ECOS®' series of tile carpets that use recycled materials from used carpet tiles for backing, and 'ECOS NEO™,' a sustainable product with the highest domestic recycled material ratio in the ECOS® line.

'Re:Rug' was born from the 'SUMINOE Leftover Yarn Recycling Project,' combining the expertise and craftsmanship of a long-established manufacturer to address the leftover yarn issue. Last year’s project received strong support, and subsequent online sales were well-received, with some designs selling out. Due to material constraints making reproduction difficult, this release introduces two new designs born from newly sourced leftover yarn.

Key Features of Re:Rug

1. Soft and Ultra-Lightweight! Resistant to Wrinkling The back uses a special heat-bonding process, avoiding adhesives containing natural rubber. This results in a soft, lightweight rug that resists wrinkling even when folded.

2. Machine Washable! Thanks to its lightweight design, it can be easily washed in a home washing machine. Compared to conventional rugs, it is less prone to deterioration from washing and drying, ensuring long-term use. *When washing rugs in a machine, always refer to your washing machine’s instruction manual.

3. Safe Non-Slip Backing The back features a gentle non-slip treatment that won’t scratch floors. It stays in place even with active children or pets and is easy to clean without hassle.

4. High-Quality and Safe for Infants This high-quality rug meets the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare’s strict formaldehyde safety standards for infant products.

5. Two Designs to Match Your Taste Experienced designers carefully combined various yarns to create two distinct designs. By using leftover yarn, the rugs are offered at lower prices than comparable domestically produced rugs of the same size.

6. Practical Sizes and Eco-Friendly Packaging Available in two sizes: 185×185cm (square) and 185×240cm (rectangle), suitable for both individuals and families. Packaged in craft paper with an internal mesh sheet instead of cardboard, reducing waste.

Transforming 'discarded leftover yarn' into 'valuable new rugs.'

The project’s designers prioritized not 'because it’s sustainable' but 'because this rug is desirable'—making people want it for its appeal. To ensure long-term use in daily life, the team focused first on visual design, texture, and quality, with sustainability as a meaningful background. Every detail—from material combinations and color schemes to touch—was carefully crafted.

Your Rug Purchase Supports Environmental Education

A portion of sales will be donated to the Japan Environmental Education Forum (JEEF), which aims to realize a sustainable society through environmental education. These funds support programs such as nature experience camps co-hosted with nature schools and free educational video creation for children undergoing medical treatment—ensuring no one is left behind in environmental learning.
