Tombow Pencil Co., Ltd. will release three new "Field Gear Colors" for its knock-type pressurized 0.7mm oil-based ballpoint pen, the 'AirPress' (priced at 770 JPY / 700 JPY excl. tax), starting May 28th, available at stationery stores nationwide. The new colors are Beige, Blue Gray, and Khaki. Combined with the currently available Full Black, Clear, and Yellow, the lineup will total six colors.
The 'AirPress', launched in 2008, is a pioneer in pressurized ballpoint pens, featuring a function that uses the force of the knock to compress air and apply pressure to the refill, improving ink flow. Sales have been strong against the backdrop of a booming outdoor lifestyle since 2020, and this new color addition serves to strengthen the product line.
This pen handles conditions that are challenging for ordinary ballpoint pens, such as writing while standing, writing upwards, and on damp paper. Envisioned usage scenarios include recording sports scores, conducting field surveys, and documenting outdoor activities like camping, hiking, and fishing. It features a tough specification with a thick, non-slip 13.7mm diameter body and a movable wire clip that securely attaches to pockets.
The mechanism works by having a piston slide with each knock to send air into a pressure chamber. This injects compressed air at about 1.5 atmospheres into the refill, promoting ink flow. This ensures a clear, consistent line without smudging, even during rapid or upward writing and on wet paper.
The thick 13.7mm body allows for firm writing pressure, while the short 122mm length is ideal for quick knocks and portability. The body surface is coated with a soft elastomer resin, making it non-slip even with sweaty hands or while wearing gloves.
A movable metal wire clip securely fastens to both thin and thick materials and is designed to resist falling off during vigorous movement.
