Naresome Research, operated by Naresome Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo, Representative Director: Yutaka Uba), which runs the marriage agency "Naresome Yobiko," has released a research article based on a survey conducted among 402 men and women who have experienced marriage or engagement regarding "Contact Tools During the Dating Period."

This survey analyzed the reasons for differences in communication frequency and content during dating. The results revealed the differing objectives men and women seek from communication tools, as well as common standards among couples who have successfully married.

Men Want to Enjoy Dates, Women Want to Enjoy "Interactions" Other Than Dates

*Partner = Fiancé(e) or Spouse. Responses: 106 men

*Partner = Fiancé(e) or Spouse. Responses: 296 women

When asked about the purpose of using contact tools during their dating period, a decisive difference was observed in how men and women perceived these tools.

Men: In-Person is for "Enjoyment," Text is for "Scheduling"

For men, the highest percentage (67.0%) for "enjoyment" was associated with "in-person" interactions, indicating they place the greatest value on meeting face-to-face. On the other hand, "enjoyment" via text (LINE, etc.) remained at 48.1%, with the primary purpose concentrated on "scheduling" (86.8%). This suggests that for men, text messages tend to serve strongly as administrative communication for smoothly arranging meetings.

Women: "Daily LINE" is as Enjoyable as In-Person Dates

For women, "enjoyment" via "text" (62.2%) surpassed "enjoyment" in "in-person" interactions (60.5%). This indicates that for women, daily LINE conversations are considered a "precious communication time to enjoy with their boyfriend," on par with or even more so than dates.

Common Ground for Married Couples: Contact is "Daily," Dates are "Once or More Per Week" for Close Proximity

An analysis of how frequently couples who actually married or became engaged contacted each other during their dating period, categorized by physical distance (travel time), revealed common standards among successful couples.

[Date Frequency] For Less Than 2 Hours Travel, "Once or More Per Week" is Standard

Responses: 402 men and women (106 men, 296 women)

It was found that for distances less than 2 hours one-way, over 80% of couples met "once or more per week."

[Text Frequency] Regardless of Distance, "Daily" is the Norm

Responses: 402 men and women (106 men, 296 women)

Regardless of physical distance, an overwhelming majority of couples, approximately 75% to 90%, send texts "daily." It was confirmed that even men maintain consistent daily communication with their serious partners whom they eventually marry.

[Long-Distance Countermeasure] About 1 in 3 "Call Daily" to Compensate

Responses: 402 men and women (106 men, 296 women)

For long-distance relationships exceeding 3 hours one-way, 34.5%, or about 1 in 3 individuals, reported "calling daily." This suggests that to bridge the physical distance, they are making voice communication, which carries more information than text, a routine to shorten emotional distance.

Relationship Psychologist Keita Yamazaki Comments

Keita Yamazaki, a relationship psychologist who has been involved in over 1,000 counseling sessions and supported over 1,200 successful marriages at Naresome Yobiko, commented on the results as follows:

"The data clearly shows that men and women have fundamentally different objectives regarding communication tools. While for many men, text is a tool for scheduling, for women, it is communication itself.

Couples who achieve marriage maintain contact at a high frequency regardless of physical distance, but what's important is understanding this difference in 'what they are seeking.' A little effort to step towards each other's styles will build an unshakeable trust relationship necessary for moving to the next step of marriage."

The article further elaborates on the following points:

How the desire to "meet more" influences the choice of communication method (phone calls, video calls)

Why couples satisfied with their meeting frequency experience a mismatch in "purpose of meeting"

Advice for Women: His "terse replies" might be a sign of "trust"

Advice for Men: A little "extra effort" can create a sense of security for her
