Exhibition Opens at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo
From today, May 26th (Tuesday), until July 26th (Sunday), the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo is hosting the exhibition "(UN)KNOWN HIROKO KOSHINO." Prior to the general opening, an opening ceremony and press preview were held, attended by Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike. Designer Hiroko Koshino performed a live drawing at the venue to mark the start of the event.
This exhibition re-examines the creative work of Hiroko Koshino, a leading figure in fashion and expressive culture, from a contemporary perspective, capturing its essential value and scope. Approximately 200 selected collection pieces and 130 paintings are displayed, questioning the meaning of her expression by overlaying it with the social conditions, cultural contexts, and contemporary artistic expressions of each era.
### A Worldview Structured into Five Chapters
The exhibition is structured around the following five themes:
1. **Original Experiences and Imagination**: Showcasing a diverse range of expressions including collections, ink paintings, oil paintings, and stage curtains from her career. 2. **Intersecting Aesthetics**: Placing her work alongside era-defining creators such as Ikko Tanaka, Eiko Ishioka, and Shiro Kuramata to explore the relationship with the zeitgeist. 3. **Collaboration**: Generating cross-cultural dialogue through a partnership with contemporary artist Mathilde Denize. 4. **Passion for Textiles**: Introducing her unique textile development and sketches. An interactive exhibit allows visitors to touch the garments. 5. **The Girl Who Paints and Children**: Expressing gratitude to the future through the exhibition of works from a next-generation nurturing project.
### 'Art-like' Museum Merchandise Unveiled
Following a dialogue with Hiroko Koshino, who initially considered merchandise unnecessary, new items were developed based on the concept of creating objects that allow visitors to 'encounter' the human side of Hiroko Koshino. Items include postcards using archival photos, silk-screened T-shirts, pastel artworks, and badges made from haute couture fabrics. A catalogue is also scheduled for release at the end of June.
Hiroko Koshino expressed her hope that the exhibition would be a space for dialogue from the past to the future, stating, "I want you to meet the Hiroko Koshino you didn't know."
