Muroo Systems Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; President & CEO: Tadashi Pan; hereinafter "Muroo Systems") is pleased to announce that its project, "Feasibility Study for the Commercialization of Integrated Infrastructure for Advanced Radioactive Waste Management in the Republic of Kazakhstan," has been selected for the "FY2025 Supplementary Grant for Global South Future-Oriented Co-creation Projects (Small-Scale Demonstration/FS Projects)" by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI).
This project will be implemented jointly with NUKEM JAPAN Co., Ltd. and will conduct a Feasibility Study (FS) for the advancement of radioactive waste management infrastructure in the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Overview of Selected Project
This project will investigate the feasibility of realizing integrated infrastructure in the Republic of Kazakhstan that combines:
* Treatment of radioactive waste
* Interim Storage
* Digital Management
The selection details published by Japan's METI indicate that the basic policy of this project is to "aim to build a safe and sustainable infrastructure model by combining European technology with equipment and digital technology from Japanese companies."
Muroo Systems aims to build next-generation radioactive waste management systems by integrating AI, IoT, digital platforms, and equipment technology held by Japanese companies with European nuclear engineering technology.
German NUKEM to Handle Nuclear Engineering Technology
In this project, NUKEM Technologies Engineering Services GmbH (Karlstein, Germany), a core company of the Muroo Systems Group, will be responsible for technical implementation.
Since its establishment in 1960, NUKEM has participated in projects in various countries for over 60 years in fields such as:
* Decommissioning of nuclear facilities
* Radioactive waste management
* Spent fuel management
* Radiation protection
* Nuclear facility engineering
* Owner's engineering
In this FS, NUKEM's European nuclear engineering technology, design know-how, and international project experience will be utilized to conduct technical studies on an integrated infrastructure model for radioactive waste treatment, interim storage, and digital management.
Muroo Systems will be responsible for integration with digital technologies held by Japanese companies, project management, and collaboration with Japanese partners, promoting the creation of a new business model that fuses European and Japanese technologies.
Further Development of Cooperation with Kazakhstan
The Muroo Systems Group has been expanding its cooperative relationships in the energy and nuclear fields in Central Asia in recent years. In September 2025, NUKEM Technologies Engineering Services GmbH signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on strategic partnership with the Atomic Energy Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Furthermore, in conjunction with the "Central Asia + Japan" Dialogue and Summit held in Tokyo in December 2025, Muroo Systems signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation in the field of spent fuel and radioactive waste management with the National Nuclear Center of the Republic of Kazakhstan (NNC).
Based on the trust built through these collaborations, this FS project will examine the specific business feasibility for advancing radioactive waste management infrastructure in Kazakhstan.
Promoting the Fusion of "Energy x Digital x Nuclear Engineering Technology"
In recent years, investment in the nuclear backend field, including the construction of new nuclear power plants, long-term operation of existing facilities, decommissioning, and radioactive waste management, has been expanding globally.
Simultaneously, advancements in AI and digital technologies are rapidly accelerating the adoption of infrastructure management enhancements, digital twins, remote monitoring, and predictive maintenance.
The Muroo Systems Group aims to build next-generation nuclear infrastructure that combines safety, efficiency, and sustainability by leveraging its unique strengths in "European nuclear engineering technology x Japanese digital technology."
Future Outlook
Through this FS project, we aim to examine a business model for advancing radioactive waste management in the Republic of Kazakhstan and to establish a new overseas expansion model through the collaboration of Japanese companies and European technology.
Muroo Systems will continue to promote international cooperation in the fields of energy, nuclear power, and digital infrastructure in the Global South region, including Central Asia, and contribute to the development of sustainable social infrastructure.
