Mikimori Holdings Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director: Ryusho An; hereinafter "Mikimori HD") is pleased to announce that it has significantly expanded its business pipeline by completing agreements and basic agreements for the acquisition and operation of 10 "grid-connected storage battery" projects, totaling approximately 81 MWh in capacity, as part of building next-generation energy infrastructure for the realization of carbon neutrality.

This project is a crucial initiative that addresses the challenges of power supply-demand balance accompanying the expansion of renewable energy adoption and contributes to the realization of a sustainable society (SDGs).

Background and Challenges: Why Grid-Connected Storage Batteries Are Needed Now

In recent years, the adoption of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power has been rapidly advancing in Japan with the goal of achieving "carbon neutrality by 2050." On the other hand, due to the fluctuating nature of renewable energy generation dependent on weather conditions, "power supply-demand tightness" and an increase in "output control (curtailment)" due to oversupply have become serious societal issues.

To solve these challenges and stabilize the power grid, the importance of "grid-connected storage batteries," which are directly connected to the power grid for charging and discharging, as "ancillary services" is higher than ever before.

Project Overview and Features

The 10 projects for which Mikimori HD has signed development agreements have the following features:

Development Scale: Total output 19.8 MW / Total capacity 81 MWh (equivalent to the daily electricity consumption of approximately 8,000 general households)

Development Locations: [10 locations nationwide]

Technical Features and Business Model: These facilities will engage in arbitrage trading by storing electricity during periods of low market prices (when renewable energy is in surplus) and discharging it during periods of high prices (when electricity is in short supply). Furthermore, advanced operations are planned, including future participation in data centers and collaboration with renewable energy power sources utilizing the FIP (Feed-in Premium) system.

Contribution to Local Communities and the Environment (SDGs)

This project goes beyond mere profit generation and provides the following values to society:

Promotion of a Decarbonized Society: It promotes the efficient and waste-free utilization of renewable energy (reduction of output curtailment), directly contributing to improved energy self-sufficiency in Japan and reduced CO2 emissions.

Enhancement of Regional Resilience: It serves as a backup power supply function during disasters and large-scale power outages, contributing to the disaster preparedness and infrastructure resilience of local communities.

Future Outlook

Under the philosophy of "Connecting the next generation to a sustainable energy environment," Mikimori HD will continue to promote the construction of social infrastructure that contributes to solving Japan's energy challenges.

Moving forward, we will further strengthen alliances with diverse partners, including battery manufacturers, EPC contractors, aggregators, financial institutions, and investment organizations, to accelerate the development of grid-connected storage battery facilities on a nationwide scale.
