Hakone Gora Park
Opened in 1914 at Gora, the terminal station of the Hakone Tozan Railway, it is Japan's first French formal garden. A French formal garden is characterized by its symmetrical, geometric arrangement of fountains and ponds on a flat, expansive site, but Gora Park is built on a slope. It was planned in conjunction with the development of the Gora area at the time and was popular with villa residents and many users of the "Hakone Tozan Railway," which opened five years after the park.
Even today, the open park surrounded by a vast sky and mountains, unchanged from its early days, is attractive for the variety of experiences it offers throughout the day, with the opening of the hands-on workshop "Hakone Craft House" in 2004 and later the sandwich restaurant "Isshikido Sarou."
