Saint-Émilion x Niki: Merlot Exchange Meeting Held

On Tuesday, May 19, 2026, Philippe Troussier, former manager of the Japan national football team and currently a wine producer in Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux, visited Niki Town, Hokkaido.

This event focused on the "Merlot" variety, shared by the rising wine-producing region of Niki Town and the historic Saint-Émilion. Hosted by NIKI Hills Winery, the session included tastings of wines from both regions and enthusiastic discussions.

Commonalities Between Coaching and Winemaking

During his presentation, Troussier stated, "A manager's job is to lead a team, instill discipline, and maintain balance. The work of a winemaker is similar: providing precise instructions to bring out the best in every element and create a 'grand vin' as a unified team."

He also shared his thoughts on his own wine, "FLAT 3 by KANTOKU," saying, "I created it to recall the glorious memory of 2002 and for the big challenge of 2026." He amused the audience by comparing his wines to football players, calling "SOL BENI" a creative player and "FLAT 3" an attacking one.

Tastings Crossing Borders

Wines from NIKI Hills Winery, Domaine Bless, and North Creek Farm were served at the meeting. After inspecting the vineyards, Troussier remarked that Niki Town is "so similar to Saint-Émilion that I hardly feel any difference," expressing keen interest in Japan's delicate winemaking techniques.

In his closing remarks, Troussier noted, "The purpose of this 'match' is not a battle of quality, but discovery. Our passion is shared." He left a powerful message, stating his resolve to become a bridge between Saint-Émilion and Niki Town.

Niki Town Mayor Sato also expressed high expectations that this interaction marks the first step toward becoming a world-class wine region. NIKI Hills Winery will continue its challenge of creating world-class wines from Niki Town, drawing strength from these newfound bonds.
