Emperor Shomu, who ascended the throne in 724, issued an imperial edict in 741 to establish Kokubunji temples, and 68 Kokubunji temples were built across the country. It is believed that the Kii Kokubunji temple was also completed by 756.

The Kii Kokubunji ruins, a nationally designated historic site, are currently maintained as a historical park.

To help more people learn about and appreciate the cultural assets that the region is proud of, we will hold the "Onigawara" Grand Prix for the second consecutive year. Last year, 42 people participated in the creation, and 442 votes were cast during the exhibition and voting period. Original onigawara (demon roof tiles) will be created using unglazed clay at the Historical Folk Museum adjacent to Kii Kokubunji. Afterward, the exhibition and voting will take place at the Uchida Lifelong Learning Center, and the top three participants will be decided. The results will be announced on the Kinokawa City website and other platforms, and the "Oni One (No.1 Onigawara)" will be displayed at the Historical Folk Museum for one year.
