Even before modern sports were introduced from the West after the Meiji era, Japanese people have enjoyed sports since ancient times. During the Edo period, training in swordsmanship, archery, and horsemanship was recommended as essential skills for samurai, and from this, competitions developed that vied for records and victories. Additionally, sports rooted in Shinto rituals, performing arts, and upper-class ceremonies have existed since ancient times. These spread to the general public over time, and many people enjoyed sports as entertainment, either by watching competitions or actually playing them.

This year, as the Asian Games and Asian Para Games are being held in Aichi Prefecture, we will introduce various sports that people enjoyed during the Edo period through the collection of the Iwase Bunko Library.
