Seminar Overview

On May 18, 2026, Kanehara & Co., Ltd. held a press seminar at the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare to commemorate the publication of the 'Patient Handbook for Esophageal Cancer'.

Speakers included Dr. Yuya Takeuchi, Director of the Japan Esophageal Society and Director of Hamamatsu University Hospital; Dr. Ken Kato, Vice Director of the Japan Esophageal Society and Head of the Department of Head and Neck/Esophageal Medical Oncology at the National Cancer Center Hospital; and Mr. Kenjiro Takagi, Representative Director of Esophageal Cancer Survivors Sharing (ECSS).

Background and Objectives

At the seminar, it was highlighted that approximately 27,000 people in Japan are diagnosed with esophageal cancer annually, with about 11,000 deaths. Dr. Yuya Takeuchi noted that Japan boasts world-class treatment outcomes, with a 30-day post-esophagectomy mortality rate that is exceptionally low globally.

However, a 'gap in information' persists for patients. This handbook was restructured so patients can utilize it from the moment of diagnosis through post-operative life, rather than just distributing clinical guidelines designed for medical professionals. It incorporates feedback from a November 2024 survey of 109 patients (216 responses), prioritizing information that directly impacts the daily lives of patients.

The Significance of Collaborative Production

Mr. Kenjiro Takagi, representing the patient organization, explained their efforts—including YouTube outreach, patient gatherings, and awareness events—to combat the isolation often felt by patients. He emphasized that the handbook, which includes the 'Esophageal Cancer Patient Checklist,' aims to serve as a 'roadmap' for patients and their families.
