Where is Komagome? While it is a station on the Yamanote Line, Komagome is a town with a quiet residential area and a relaxed atmosphere. It is famous for the weeping cherry trees of the Special Place of Scenic Beauty 'Rikugien' and the roses of the Place of Scenic Beauty 'Kyufurukawa Gardens.' However, its name recognition is not very high, and people often ask, 'Where is it?'
The 7th volume of 'Komagome Tsushin-bon' was created, concentrating information produced by 'Komagome people' who love the scenery, shops, and places of the area. By walking around with this book in hand, you are sure to find plenty of charm in Komagome.
The book includes 12 months' worth of the A5-sized monthly community paper 'Komagome Tsushin,' along with a preface by Machiko Kure and a manga introducing the character 'Gomes' by Hiroko Oda. This year marks the 7th year of publication. The cover features seven friends of Komagome, including the symbol character 'Koma Gomes,' looking down from the sky over Komagome, the birthplace of Somei-Yoshino cherry trees.
We define the 'Komagome region' as the area within a 15-minute walk from Komagome Station. Writing 'Komagome' in hiragana has meaning; since the station sits on the borders of Bunkyo, Toshima, and Kita wards, it tends to be treated as the 'outskirts' by each ward. The symbol character 'Koma Gomes,' a calico cat representing the three cultures of these wards, has grown to be loved by the local people. The magazine has been featured in various media, including NHK WORLD's 'Dive in Tokyo' and Tokyo Shimbun.
