What happens after we die? Anyone who has lost a loved one has likely pondered this question.

An American psychiatrist listened—through his wife as a medium—to the voices of spirits (spirits) still clinging to their physical bodies after death.

The research began when the doctor struggled to treat patients whose abnormal behaviors could not be managed by conventional medicine.

Believing that such abnormal behaviors were caused by spirit possession, the doctor devised a special apparatus to record the voices of spirits detached from patients' bodies, channeling them through his wife, who served as a medium.

The resulting 750-page record captures the voices of deceased spirits, including victims of the Titanic, popular actresses, religious leaders and followers, various addicts, criminals, amnesia sufferers, and suicide victims—primarily Western cases, with no Japanese examples included.

However, just as Native American shamans have long traditions, Japan also has a deep history of mediums, such as the 'Itako' of Ominesan in Aomori and the 'Yuta' of Okinawa.

In the preface, the author writes that this work "will shed light on the often ambiguous concept of afterlife existence and its interaction with the real world."

Salvation is found in this liminal space. Saving lost spirits is also a way of saving the living.

Dr. Carl A. Wickland (Carl A. Wickland, M.D.)

1861–1945. As an American psychiatrist, he treated patients with severe behavioral disorders deemed incurable by medicine through spirit communication, using his wife as a medium. This book compiles over thirty years of his extensive documented research. He was also an active member of the Chicago Medical Society, the Illinois State Medical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the American Geographical Society.

Kazuo Kondo (Kazuo Kondo)

Born in 1935. Developed an interest in spiritualism during high school, frequently attending séances and becoming convinced of the survival of personality after death. While studying English literature at Meiji Gakuin University, he immersed himself in original spiritualist texts and decided to pursue translation, specializing in 'Translation Theory' in his senior year. Over the years, he has repeatedly visited prominent spiritualist figures in the U.S. and U.K., as well as the birthplace of spiritualism, to introduce spiritual knowledge and promote its spread in Japan.
