Ajinomoto Co., Inc. (President: Shigeo Nakamura; Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo) has developed a new manufacturing method using fermentation technology (patent pending) for amino acid-based surfactants. Unlike conventional methods that rely on fatty acids derived from palm oil, this new process uses only sugar, which can be stably procured from various regions around the world. This technology enables the provision of amino acid-based bio-surfactants (surfactants produced by microorganisms) that are free from both petroleum-derived raw materials and palm oil. By utilizing this technology, we have resolved issues related to color and odor—common challenges with conventional bio-surfactants—while achieving superior foaming performance. Through environmentally conscious manufacturing technologies that utilize sustainable raw materials, we will continue to promote the development of high-performance materials and provide consumers with products that are gentle on the skin and pleasant to use.
In recent years, there has been a growing demand for innovation in raw materials for cosmetics and detergents to realize a sustainable society that considers the environment. In particular, while palm oil is widely used globally, it has faced international criticism regarding environmental and social issues, such as the loss of tropical rainforests due to production expansion, the resulting increase in carbon dioxide emissions, and human rights issues for plantation workers. Furthermore, there are supply constraints, as palm oil production is limited to warm, rainy regions within 10 degrees of the equator. Against this backdrop, research is underway to reduce the use of palm oil and select sustainable alternative raw materials*2.

Bio-surfactants produced by microorganisms are attracting attention because they are naturally derived, highly biodegradable, and have a low environmental impact. The market is expanding rapidly due to technological innovation and cost reductions. Currently, the global bio-surfactant market is expected to grow at an annual rate of 13% from 2021 to 2030*3. However, conventional bio-surfactants have faced challenges that make them difficult to use in cosmetics, such as weak foaming, coloration, and residual odor*4. "Bio-Acyl Glutamate," produced using the newly developed fermentation method, is a type of amino acid-based surfactant. It is the result of our research and development, which leverages our AminoScience® knowledge and know-how to address market needs and technical challenges.

This technology does not use petroleum-derived raw materials or palm oil, which is feared to face future supply shortages. By using sugar as a raw material, production becomes possible near the areas of consumption. This is also expected to contribute to the reduction of GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions associated with transportation.
In terms of functionality, we have resolved the issues of foaming, color, and odor inherent in conventional bio-surfactants. Combined with the skin-friendliness of amino acid-based surfactants, we have developed a manufacturing method for cosmetic materials that is both sustainable and functional. "Bio-Acyl Glutamate" produced with this technology is expected to be deployed in a wide range of cosmetic fields, such as shampoos and facial cleansers, as a new alternative to surfactants derived from petroleum and palm oil. By suppressing skin irritation while achieving natural foaming and a nearly colorless and odorless finish, we will contribute to improving the quality of cosmetics and enhancing customer satisfaction.
Currently, we are conducting demonstration experiments with an eye toward mass production and commercialization, while also introducing the technology to the cosmetics industry. We plan to begin shipping sample prototypes for customer evaluation during 2026. Moving forward, in addition to manufacturing that does not rely on petroleum or palm oil-derived raw materials, we will continue development to contribute to the reduction of GHG emissions throughout the value chain by selecting appropriate production locations.
Through the development and provision of sustainable materials that consider environmental and social issues, we aim to realize our purpose of contributing to the well-being of people, society, and the planet through AminoScience®.
