Sapporo's urban aquarium, 'AOAO SAPPORO' (located in Chuo-ku, Sapporo, Hokkaido; Director: Masaki Yamauchi), will launch a new exhibit, 'Cleaning Staff Duty Cards,' on Saturday, May 30, 2026, focusing on the 'cleaning organisms' that support the maintenance of tank environments.

Since its opening, AOAO SAPPORO has prioritized showcasing various creatures and highlighting their charm and observational perspectives. Marking the third 'International Day for Biological Diversity' on May 22 since opening, the aquarium will host this new exhibit focusing on 12 types of cleaning organisms—which visitors have frequently requested to know more about—starting on May 30, 'Zero Garbage Day,' when cleanup activities are held nationwide for the environment.

To create a comfortable environment for the creatures, the aquarium staff do not just clean themselves; they also utilize the natural habits of the animals. Creatures with habits of eating algae, leftover food, sand dirt, and harmful organisms (cleaning organisms) perform cleaning tasks that are difficult for humans, making them like heroes.

The world's first* 'duty cards' will be exhibited at 'LIBRARY AQUARIUM' on the 5th floor to introduce the activities of these heroes and show visitors the secrets of AOAO SAPPORO's clean tanks, as well as which creatures are in charge of cleaning today. The duty cards are also displayed at each tank within the 'LIBRARY AQUARIUM,' deepening the area into a space where visitors can observe the new charms and ecology of the creatures.

Exhibit Period: From Saturday, May 30, 2026 Location: 5F 'LIBRARY AQUARIUM' Exhibit Details: Introducing 12 types of 'cleaning organisms,' and displaying which 'cleaning staff' are on duty today for each of the 43 tanks using 'Cleaning Staff Duty Cards.'
