Case Study: Tsuzuki Manufacturing Strengthens Ransomware Countermeasures with Offline Backups via Arcserve

Arcserve Japan LLC announced on May 22, 2026, that Tsuzuki Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has enhanced its ransomware countermeasures by introducing offline data storage using magnetic tape, in addition to its existing backup systems. By leveraging the Arcserve product suite, the company has achieved a robust and cost-effective data protection framework.

Background Founded in 1944, Tsuzuki Manufacturing is a precision parts maker for automobiles and construction machinery. Operating on the principle that "restoring backups is more important than taking them," the company adopted Arcserve® Unified Data Protection (UDP) in 2017, establishing a system to recover approximately 63TB of data in-house. Following typhoon damage in 2019, it also implemented Arcserve Replication to strengthen wide-area disaster recovery with real-time replication to a data center in another prefecture.

However, as ransomware attacks targeting the manufacturing industry have escalated, protecting the backup data itself has become a critical issue. A March 2026 survey by Arcserve Japan revealed that in about 90% of ransomware incidents, the backup data was also encrypted.

Implementation Process As part of its enhanced ransomware strategy, Tsuzuki Manufacturing considered offline storage for its backup data. After comparing options, including dedicated immutable storage, the company opted for a tape-based system, which was familiar and easy to manage. By utilizing the features of Arcserve Backup, included in their existing Arcserve UDP license, they were able to implement the solution with minimal additional cost.

Results Currently, data from operational servers is consolidated on a backup server and then transferred to tape. Since the tapes are stored offline and disconnected from the network, this practice mitigates the risk of backup data being encrypted by ransomware.

Future Outlook Starting with the insourcing of its backup operations, Tsuzuki Manufacturing has progressively combined remote storage and offline tape backups to create a data protection foundation that balances cost-effectiveness and efficiency. The company plans to continue enhancing business continuity and data protection through ongoing internal training and operational improvements.
