Sapporo Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill Dr. Clark Statue 50th Anniversary Project Launches: Announcing the 'Boys, be ambitious Event' (April 16 - April 19, 2026)

The Dr. Clark statue "Clark on the Hill" at Sapporo Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill was erected and unveiled 50 years ago, on April 16, 1976, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of Hokkaido University and the 200th anniversary of the founding of the United States of America.

This day is also the day when Dr. Clark called out "Boys, be ambitious." from horseback when saying goodbye to his students in Shimamatsu 99 years earlier, on April 16, 1877.

As the Dr. Clark statue celebrates its 50th anniversary since its erection and unveiling on April 16, 2026, we plan to hold various "Dr. Clark Statue 50th Anniversary Projects" in fiscal 2026. As the first phase, we will hold the "Boys, be ambitious Event" from Thursday, April 16 to Sunday, April 19.

Thursday, April 16, the First Day, is Free Admission Day! Date: Thursday, April 16 Details: April 16 is designated as "Boys, be ambitious DAY" because Dr. Clark shouted "Boys, be ambitious." 149 years ago, on April 16, 1877. We will designate this commemorative day, Thursday, April 16, as a "Free Admission Day" for our observation hill.

Dr. Clark Statue 50th Anniversary Ambassador Appointment Ceremony Date: Thursday, April 16 Time: 10:00 Details: In order to pass on Dr. Clark's spirit of "Boys, be ambitious." to the next generation and to let more people know about the charm of Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill, we will hold an ambassador appointment ceremony.
