The Japan Software Testing Qualifications Board (JSTQB) announced the release of the Japanese version of the Advanced Level Syllabus Test Analyst (CTAL-TA) Version 4.0 on Friday, June 12, 2026.
This syllabus compiles knowledge related to test analysis, test design, and defect prevention in software testing. Certification exams based on this syllabus are scheduled to begin in mid-November 2026. Until then, JSTQB will continue administering certification exams based on the CTAL-TA 3.0 (3.1.1J03) syllabus.
Overview of the Advanced Level Syllabus Japanese Version Test Analyst Version 4.0
The Advanced Level Syllabus Japanese Version Test Analyst Version 4.0, released by JSTQB, is the Japanese translation of the ISTQB® Advanced Level Syllabus Test Analyst v4.0. It covers knowledge in test analysis, test design, and defect prevention in software testing.
This version is a major update to the previously issued Version 3.1.1J03.
Key Revisions in the Syllabus
・ Restructuring of Syllabus Organization
The number of learning objectives has been expanded from 31 (Version 3.1.2) to 36 (Version 4.0). The structure now clearly indicates which section covers each learning objective.
・ Classification of Test Techniques
Test techniques in Chapter 3 (Test Analysis and Test Design) have been categorized into three types: 'data-based techniques,' 'behavior-based techniques,' and 'rule-based techniques.' This reorganization clarifies the relationship between technique types and objectives, making it easier to select appropriate techniques.
・ Expansion of Chapter 5 (Software Defect Prevention)
The scope of Chapter 5, which previously focused only on reviews, has been broadened to include more practical content on defect prevention. New additions include the use of models to detect specification defects early, improving defect detection through test result analysis, and root cause analysis using defect classification.
・ Addition of New Topics
New topics have been introduced, including test case quality criteria, test environment requirements, test oracle determination, test data requirements, random testing, CRUD testing, metamorphic testing, cloud testing, and the benefits and risks of test design automation.
・ Alignment with International Standards
The syllabus aligns with the latest versions of international standards, including ISO/IEC 25010:2023 for software quality and ISO/IEC/IEEE 29119-4:2021 for test techniques.
