New Aquariums Boost Visitor Numbers! Monthly Visitors in May Exceed 60,000 for First Time in 20 Years

The Lake Biwa Museum recorded 61,819 monthly visitors in May 2026 (Reiwa 8). This marks the first time monthly visitors in May have exceeded 60,000 since 2006 (Heisei 18), a gap of approximately 20 years.

Thanks to the support of many people, the new Lake Biwa Giant Catfish Aquarium and the new Pond Smelt Aquarium, which opened on April 11 this year, attracted many visitors, especially during the Golden Week holiday period.

This fiscal year marks the museum's 30th anniversary, and it will continue to hold various commemorative events, including special exhibitions and an international symposium.

The 'New Lake Biwa Giant Catfish Aquarium' allows visitors to view catfish from their underside. The Lake Biwa Giant Catfish is known as the 'master of Lake Biwa.'
