Kumiodori Performance: 'Kokou no Maki'
This performance features 'Kokou no Maki,' a masterpiece from the 'Chokun Goban' (Five Works of Chokun) by Tamagusuku Chokun, the founder of Kumiodori. Centered on the theme of familial love, this popular work highlights unique Kumiodori elements, such as the dialogue between siblings and scenes of familial reunion. It will be performed by veteran practitioners joined by young successors. In the first part, accomplished mid-career Ryukyu dancers will perform classical and contemporary pieces.
[Synopsis] A giant snake living in a pond called Yaramuruchi caused storms that destroyed fields and villages. A sister and brother, living in poverty after their father's death, found a notice board while gathering gleanings. It read: 'We are looking for a sacrifice to appease the giant snake. The family of the volunteer will receive rewards to ensure they never struggle again.' The sister decided to sacrifice herself for her mother and brother. She bade farewell to her brother and answered the notice. Just as the ritual was about to begin, the giant snake appeared...
