The New National Theatre, Tokyo, is mounting a new production of Richard Strauss's operatic masterpiece, 'Electra.' Based on the brutal Greek tragedy of the House of Atreus, the opera depicts Electra’s burning obsession with vengeance and her eventual death after realizing her tragic goal. Strauss, in collaboration with Hofmannsthal, created this pinnacle of 20th-century opera.

The massive orchestra and dramatic soprano convey a torrent of emotions—grief, hatred, anxiety, fear, joy, and ecstasy—with intense tension. Conducted by Kazushi Ono and directed by Johannes Erath, the production offers an overwhelming, edge-of-your-seat experience.

Johannes Erath, making his debut at the New National Theatre, is a highly regarded director in the opera world, recently earning prestigious awards for his work at the Rossellini Festival. The title role will be performed by Aušrine Stundyte, a dramatic soprano who has caused a sensation across Europe in recent years. Joining her are acclaimed singers such as mezzo-soprano Mihoko Fujimura, Egils Silins, and Hedvig Haugerud. Artistic Director Kazushi Ono will conduct.
