【Research Background and Objectives】

SASP (Senescence-Associated Secretory Phenotype) refers to the phenomenon where aged cells secrete inflammatory substances such as cytokines. This secretion accelerates aging in neighboring cells, causes chronic inflammation and skin structure degradation, leading to visible signs of aging such as wrinkles and sagging. These effects are exacerbated by ultraviolet radiation (UVB), making SASP a key factor in photoaging. This study focused on fucoxanthin contained in 'Solarina® Extract' derived from the microalga Fistulifera solaris, evaluating its impact on SASP factors in epidermal cells.

【Research Results】

UV irradiation increased levels of inflammatory markers IL-6 and MCP-1, as well as the proteolytic enzyme MMP-3. However, the addition of fucoxanthin suppressed these increases, regardless of UV exposure. The suppression of IL-6 and MCP-1 was particularly significant. In contrast, the effect on MMP-1 was limited. Additionally, a trend toward increased expression of involucrin—a protein involved in skin maturation—was observed.

【Discussion】

The results demonstrate that fucoxanthin suppresses the expression of SASP factors that trigger inflammation and skin matrix degradation. This suggests it may help break the cycle of aging and support the maintenance of healthy skin, including improved barrier function.

【Conclusion】

Fucoxanthin shows potential to effectively combat both intrinsic aging and photoaging, positioning it as a promising new anti-aging ingredient for future applications.

【Glossary】

SASP: Phenomenon where senescent cells secrete inflammatory substances UVB: Ultraviolet radiation responsible for skin aging Fucoxanthin: Functional compound derived from algae IL-6/MCP-1: Substances that induce inflammation MMP: Enzyme that degrades skin collagen Involucrin: Protein involved in skin barrier formation

Diatom 'Solaris' is characterized by high fucoxanthin content

Solaris is notable for its exceptionally high fucoxanthin content compared to macroalgae. Previously considered a rare material due to difficulties in mass production, we have now established a domestic cultivation and extraction process, enabling end-to-end production. We aim to build a sustainable, low-environmental-impact supply chain for domestically produced ingredients.
