The Council for Cultural Affairs has submitted a report to the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology recommending the designation of the Former Furui Family Residence as a National Treasure (structure). Built in the 15th century, this residence is one of the oldest existing folk houses in Japan and, along with the Hakogi Family Residence, will be the first folk house to be designated as a National Treasure. With this recommendation, the total number of National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties will reach 2,611.
