At Hondoji Temple in Hiraga, Matsudo City, Chiba Prefecture, 50,000 hydrangeas and 5,000 irises are in full bloom. The peak season is expected to continue until late June.
The flowers are growing well this year, as they do annually, and colorful hydrangeas decorate the temple grounds.
Known as the 'Hydrangea Temple' or 'Temple of Four Seasons Flowers,' Hondoji is characterized by its overwhelming scale across approximately 30,000 square meters of undulating grounds. The scenery of hydrangeas blooming against the backdrop of the iconic 'Five-story Pagoda' and the historical 'Nio-mon Gate' attracts many visitors every year as a day-trip spot announcing the arrival of early summer, aided by its convenient accessibility, just 40 minutes from Tokyo (Ueno Station) via the JR Joban Line (get off at Kita-Kogane Station).
Highlights and History of Hondoji Temple Hondoji Temple was founded in 1277 when a Hokkedo hall was established on the site of the former residence of the Hiraga family, a distinguished Genji clan, with the help of the local lord at the time, Kyoshin Soya, a devout follower of Nichiren, the founder of the Nichiren sect. 'Hondo' means the land (Buddha land) where the Buddha resides, and the plants and flowers in the precincts contain prayers for leading people to peace of mind.
