On Thursday, May 7, Reiwa 8 (2026), an open-field strawberry competition was held at the JA Takatsuki Abuno branch, featuring strawberries that have been produced in the area for over 70 years. Despite open-field strawberries being susceptible to weather conditions and difficult to cultivate, the competition showcased magnificent strawberries with excellent shape, luster, and uniformity. Farmers participating in the competition vied for the results of their dedicated efforts.

Open-field strawberry cultivation began in Takatsuki City's Abuno district around 1950, and currently, about 30 farmers continue to cultivate them. Open-field cultivation is a method where yields tend to vary due to susceptibility to weather and pests. However, it is characterized by a higher aroma compared to strawberries grown in greenhouses. Most strawberries found in the market are greenhouse-grown, with harvesting starting around December, but open-field strawberries, grown outdoors, are harvested in May, which is the natural peak season for strawberries.

On this day, 16 cultivating farmers from the city each exhibited their carefully selected, bright red strawberries, filling the venue with a sweet fragrance. Judging was based on criteria such as shape, luster, and uniformity, with five entries selected in the initial screening. In the subsequent sugar content test, judges cut each strawberry, measured the squeezed juice with a refractometer, and confirmed the numerical values. Ultimately, three entries received awards, and Mr. Masao Nishijima (Nishikan, Takatsuki City) was chosen for the Excellence Award. Mr. Sano from the Northern Osaka Prefectural Agriculture and Greenery General Office, who served as a judge, commented, "I imagine cultivation was very challenging due to the severe lingering heat last year, but all the strawberries were excellent, well-balanced in color, luster, and shape, showing evidence of meticulous work."
