As the snowmelt progresses in early spring, Mount Kasagatake (2,898 m), towering over Takayama City in Gifu Prefecture, presents a spectacular sight: the remaining snow on its slopes forms the shape of a white horse.
From the summit, the snow forms the "ears," then the "neck," with frozen snow on the left resembling the horse's body and on the right appearing as its front legs, creating a natural "snow white horse" that adorns the mountain.
This "White Horse pattern" has long been widely known as a guide for agricultural work, signaling the timing for rice planting as soon as it appears. On May 10th, Katsuro Mizunashi, who was tilling a rice field in Kurahashira, Kamitakara-cho, commented, "Seeing the White Horse makes me feel that the rice farming season has arrived again this year. I want to grow delicious rice."
The White Horse pattern can be observed until approximately early June and attracts many people's attention as a natural sign indicating the change of seasons. Combined with the clear spring skies, it has become a popular scenic spot. Please do visit and experience it for yourself.
