A rare leaf mutation known as 'Fukurohoba' has appeared on a magnolia tree at Saisho-ji Temple in Imonotani, Kiyomi Town, Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture.

Fukurohoba refers to a phenomenon where a leaf stalk emerges from the underside of a magnolia leaf, causing the leaf to curl into a bell-like shape. In the same area, the 'Imoto no Fukurohoba' is designated as a Natural Monument by Gifu Prefecture. Although the original tree fell into decay in 1975 (Showa 50), several grafted magnolia trees planted around 1965 (Showa 40) still grow in the region.

This year, over ten Fukurohoba leaves have been spotted on the temple's magnolia tree, offering visitors a unique natural experience through autumn.

Can you find them? Come and explore this rare botanical wonder.

Additionally, Saisho-ji Temple is home to the legend of 'The Miracle of the Pouched Magnolia Leaves,' honoring the virtues of the temple's 10th head priest, Jochi, who was regarded as a living Buddha.
