The rare, high-end brand 'Hida Melon,' a specialty of Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture, which only a limited number of farmers can cultivate, has once again reached its peak harvest season. The most distinctive features of Hida Melon are its exquisitely fine and beautiful netting, like a work of art, and its astonishing sweetness with a Brix level of '14° or higher.' Its melt-in-your-mouth texture and rich aroma make it extremely popular as a summer gift, such as for Ochuugen.
Harnessing Temperature Differences: The History of Turning 'Impossible' into 'Miracle' in a High-Altitude Region
The first attempt to cultivate high-end melons in Hida Takayama was in 1978. At the time, it was common practice to grow melons in warm regions, and because they are delicate to environmental changes, cultivation in the high-altitude Hida Takayama was extremely difficult.
However, local producers did not give up and continued their research. They established techniques for thorough temperature and moisture control within pipe houses. This allowed them to turn the 'intense day-night temperature differences' unique to Hida into their greatest strength, developing a unique cultivation method that allows the fruit to store sweetness to its limit. Currently, it has been selected as a top brand, 'Made by Hida Takayama,' certified by Takayama City as a unique and highly reliable local product. Only 13 farmers belonging to the 'Hida Melon Research Association' carefully grow this supreme Earl's melon and ship it nationwide.
They are truly '13 Artisans' inheriting the DNA of Hida's craftsmanship.
'Delicious Melons Have Been Produced Again This Year': Delivered Fresh from the Early Morning Farm
At 'Hayashi Farm,' a member of the Hida Melon Research Association located in Ena-kocho, the harvesting and shipping operations are currently at their peak.
To maintain the optimal condition for the melons, work begins in the early morning. All employees carefully select each perfectly round and ripe melon, cut it, and pack it with care to prevent any damage.
Kazuya Shiroyama of the farm expressed his confidence, saying, 'This year, the melons have fully absorbed the blessings of Hida and have turned out to be the most delicious. We want everyone to enjoy them with smiles, sharing them with family and loved ones.'
