At railway operation sites, the transition of tracks, structures, and electrical facilities into 3D data is rapidly advancing. With point cloud acquisition via 3D scanners, design through BIM/CIM, and construction planning utilizing 3D simulations—amidst the demand for more sophisticated infrastructure management—the cultivation of 3D talent to drive this change has become a common challenge across the industry.
Recognizing the need for education that enables field engineers to truly 'use' these tools, four companies—East Japan Railway Company (JR East), West Japan Railway Company (JR West), JR East Consultants Company, and JR West Consultants Company—have jointly developed and supervised the 'Railway 3D Modeling Practical Program,' a 3D modeling education program for railway operators. CIVILCREATE Inc. will manage the program, leveraging its expertise from operating 'Saku-Share CAMP,' an educational program for the civil engineering and construction industry.
The program is structured so that even young engineers with no CAD experience can make point cloud processing and 3D modeling of railway facilities their 'own tools.'
Starting today, May 26, 2026, applications for demo materials are being accepted (the official rollout is scheduled for mid-June 2026). Further details will be unveiled at the '2nd Railway Technology Exhibition Osaka 2026,' held at Intex Osaka from Wednesday, May 27, to Friday, May 29.
Why We Created This — Overcoming the 'We Have It, But Can't Use It' Dilemma Together
While 3D data conversion advances at railway sites, comments like these are constantly heard: 'We acquired the point cloud, but who will model it?' 'We can meet the BIM/CIM delivery requirements, but we can't step into actual utilization.' 'Even if we introduce the tools, young staff who can operate them aren't being trained.'
3D data is being gathered. However, the personnel to operate it are not keeping pace. This gap cannot be bridged simply by introducing tools. Education is necessary to bring field engineers to a state where they can actually 'use' them. The 'Railway 3D Modeling Practical Program' was developed as a training material rooted in practical on-site work, brought together by the shared awareness of this issue among engineers from the JR Group.
Program Features ▲ Three Features of the Learning Experience (Video + Illustration / Mentor Support / Supervised by Railway Engineers) 1. Two-Tier Structure of Video + Practical Exercises It doesn't end with just classroom learning. We incorporate hands-on work using actual data of railway facilities. 2. Covers the Entire Process: Design, Construction, and Maintenance Rather than a one-time acquisition of 3D operations, it develops the ability to integrate 3D into business processes. 3. Designed for Those with No CAD Experience Structured from a beginner's perspective, accommodating young engineers, mid-career hires, and those transitioning from other professions. 4. Training Materials Based on Real Examples of Railway Facilities The materials are based on actual facilities handled at railway sites, such as bridges, tracks, platforms, viaducts, and station buildings. You can learn everything from converting point cloud data to 3D models to utilizing them in design and construction in a way directly linked to tomorrow's work.
