Civic Groups Call for Urgent Reform of Social Assistance Act; DPP Promises Bill Submission This Session

Civic groups, including the Life Stewards Association and the Taiwan Labour Front, held a press conference at the Legislative Yuan calling for the urgent review of the 'Social Assistance Act.' They argued that the current law is too complex, hindering support for vulnerable populations. DPP caucus secretary-general Fan Yun stated that the Executive Yuan has promised to submit its version of the bill this session, and Lin Yueh-chin, the DPP convener of the Social Welfare and Environmental Hygiene Committee, pledged to prioritize its review. The groups are calling for the abolition of unreasonable household income assessments and residency requirements. Deputy Minister of Health and Welfare Lu Chien-te has also acknowledged the need for modernization. Ma Ming-yi of the Taiwan Labour Front criticized the lack of progress, noting that the reform is part of President Lai Ching-te's 'National Hope Project.' Lin emphasized that once the bill is submitted, it will be scheduled for review immediately. Fan Yun stressed the importance of sharing economic prosperity and ensuring dignity for those without economic security, promising to monitor the process.
