Ministry of Economic Affairs: Power Supply Stable Through 2034, Accounting for Semiconductor and AI Demand

After NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang mentioned Taiwan's need for more power yesterday, the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) stated today that it has incorporated the power needs of semiconductors and AI data centers into its management. With four large gas-fired units (5.2GW) coming online by the end of this year and a cumulative 10.2GW of gas-fired capacity by 2034, power supply is secure through 2034. During an Executive Yuan press conference, spokesperson Li Hui-chih emphasized that stable power is the foundation for high-tech and SME development. The government is promoting a second energy transition while aiming for sufficient and resilient power. Li noted that Taiwan is transitioning coal plants to gas to meet environmental and net-zero goals. With adjustments by the MOEA and Taipower, supply is stable through 2034. Deputy Director-General Chen Chung-hsien of the Energy Administration added that the MOEA publishes annual power supply-demand reports covering the next decade, including all semiconductor and AI data center needs. He reiterated that with 10.2GW of gas capacity added by 2034, supply for these sectors is secure.
