Taichung City Council Dispute: DPP Councilors Demand Apology from Mayor Lu for 'Counter-Questioning'

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) caucus in the Taichung City Council demanded today that Taichung Mayor Lu Xiu-yan apologize for 'counter-supervising' city councilors. The Taichung City Government responded that Mayor Lu's responses did not violate parliamentary rules. On the 26th, during a council session, DPP councilor Chen Yu-jung questioned Mayor Lu about unfulfilled campaign promises. Mayor Lu replied, 'I am looking at your campaign promises, including the Blue Line construction—has it started? Your progress is also zero.' The DPP caucus held a press conference, with convener Chou Yung-hung stating that councilors should not be subjected to insults from the mayor. Councilor Chen added that while personal insults might be tolerated, disrespecting the council is unacceptable. Other DPP councilors urged the mayor to focus on municipal affairs. During the session, both sides argued, leading the speaker to call for a 10-minute recess. The city government stated that according to constitutional interpretations, Mayor Lu's responses were intended to clarify facts and explain policies, and did not violate any rules.
