To combat drug-impaired driving, the Taitung County Police Bureau recently launched a 'Drug-Impaired Driving Investigation Project,' identifying and stopping vehicles with erratic driving or abnormal behavior. In 14 days, 11 cases of drug-impaired driving were uncovered, with two drivers detained by court order. Taitung police stated that from the 15th to the 28th, they conducted inspections on major roads and security hotspots, immediately testing drivers who showed signs of drug use. Police noted that drug-impaired drivers suffer from symptoms like mental confusion, impaired judgment, or hallucinations, making them as dangerous as drunk drivers and 'ticking time bombs.' If a driver tests positive on a saliva drug screening kit or refuses testing, officers can determine they are 'unable to drive safely' based on objective circumstances and arrest them as current offenders. The Taitung County Police Bureau stated that to increase enforcement intensity, they will regularly purchase and use saliva drug screening kits, coordinating with road checks and patrols to trace the source of drugs.
