From 'Anti-Fifth Naphtha' to TSMC: Kaohsiung's Houjin Holds Concert to Commemorate Environmental Movement

About 40 years ago, residents of Houjin, Kaohsiung, organized the 'Anti-Fifth Naphtha Cracker' movement. Eleven years ago, the CPC Corporation's Kaohsiung refinery closed, and the site is now being developed for a TSMC plant. Participants gathered on the 30th for a concert to pay tribute to the movement's pioneers. The Houjin Social Welfare Foundation and other groups held the '40th Anniversary Concert' at the Fengping Temple in Nanzi District. The event featured performances by local bands. The Earth Citizens Foundation noted that the CPC Kaohsiung refinery was once the largest source of pollution in Taiwan, but successfully transformed through the persistence of Houjin residents. The site now hosts TSMC's advanced process plant, and the Kaohsiung City government plans to create an 'ecological green corridor.' Huang Shi-long, head of the temple management committee, stated that the refinery's closure was a result of collective effort. Associate Professor Chiu Hua-mei of National Sun Yat-sen University emphasized that unity was key to the movement's success.
