Hegseth: Preparing for any contingencies, US stance on Taiwan unchanged

US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, attending the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, stated in a media interview on the 30th that the US is aware of China's significant military expansion and is considering this to ensure readiness for any potential contingencies. He also reaffirmed that the US stance on Taiwan has not changed. Hegseth noted that there are areas where the US can cooperate with China, but emphasized the need to "speak softly while carrying a big stick." He stated that the US expects allies and partners to increase defense spending to 3.5% of GDP, and that the US has committed $1.5 trillion to strengthen its own military. Regarding the recent meeting between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, Hegseth said that dialogue to reduce conflict is crucial, but it does not necessarily mean a fundamental change in bilateral relations. Regarding arms sales to Taiwan, he said it ultimately depends on President Trump's decision.
