CNA, Taipei, May 31. The Ministry of Transportation and Communications has launched a new strategy for driver license management, with the new elderly license renewal system taking effect today. The renewal age has been lowered from 75 to 70. The Highway Bureau stated that it will send out an average of 100,000 notifications per month to remind elderly drivers to renew their licenses. Those aged 70 to 75 must pass a physical exam and complete a 2-hour road safety course. Those 75 and older must pass a cognitive test or provide proof of no moderate dementia, and renew every 3 years. Failure to renew within the grace period will result in a fine of NT$1,800 to NT$3,600. Additionally, hazard perception questions will be added to the car written test starting June 30.
