Lebanon: Hezbollah Accepts US Proposal to Halt Mutual Attacks with Israel

The Lebanese Embassy in Washington issued a statement today indicating that the Lebanese political and military organization Hezbollah has accepted a proposal from the United States to cease mutual hostilities, with the scope extending to cover all Lebanese territory. Reuters reported that the statement, forwarded by the Lebanese presidency on X, notes that this arrangement will first see Israel refrain from launching strikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut in exchange for Hezbollah stopping its attacks on Israel. Israel had threatened to strike the suburbs of the Lebanese capital, Beirut, earlier today. Hezbollah lawmaker Hassan Fadlallah told the organization's Al-Manar TV that Hezbollah would support a comprehensive ceasefire in Lebanon as a prelude to the withdrawal of Israeli troops, adding that the organization would observe over the coming days whether the cessation of hostilities can be truly implemented. AFP reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said today he told US President Donald Trump that if Hezbollah does not stop attacking Israel, Israel will strike Beirut. According to a statement released by Netanyahu's office, he said: 'I spoke with US President Trump tonight and told him that if Hezbollah does not stop attacking our towns and citizens, Israel will strike terrorist targets in Beirut.' He added: 'Our position remains unchanged. At the same time, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) will continue to operate in southern Lebanon as planned.'
